Arctic School Building with Trespa® Meteon® Panels

Tromsø, Norway, located above the Arctic Circle, is where Trespa® Meteon® panels have taken on the challenge of extreme weather.

Arctic Challenge: Trespa® Meteon® Panels Defend Tromsø's School

Designed by architect Knut Brandsberg-Dahl of Filter Arkitekter, the Sommerlyst School project in Tromsø presented unique demands in terms of energy efficiency, inclusivity, and local material use. Trespa® Meteon® panels, known for their durability, were chosen to meet these requirements.

Durable Protection Against Snow and Cold

To protect against the harsh climate, the building features five entrances entirely clad with Trespa® Meteon® cladding. With 6.50 meters of snowfall recorded between November 2019 and April 2020, these panels offer robust protection. The choice of Trespa® Meteon® cladding was driven not only by their resilience but also their aesthetic appeal. The panels come in a variety of colors and finishes, offering a lively contrast to the dark wood used for most of the façades. A soft shade of pale gold from the Metallics collection, M40.3 Mustard Yellow in Satin finish, was chosen to create a subtle tonal play. By installing every other panel at a 90° angle, a unique checkerboard effect was achieved, adding dynamism to the façade. Additionally, the architects used the extensive Trespa® Meteon® palette to decorate one of the main entrances with a frieze in muted metallic colours, entirely made of triangles.

Local Installer Masters HPL Cladding Challenge

The success of the Sommerlyst School project with Trespa® Meteon® panels marked a significant milestone for both the architects and the local installer, Econor AS. Although they had not previously worked with HPL cladding, Econor AS, a local firm, embraced the challenge with enthusiasm, resulting in a flawless final result.

Prioritizing Durability and Quality for Future Projects

Looking ahead, Filter Arkitekter wanted to use Trespa® Meteon® panels for another project, but a general contractor opted for a different product. Knut Brandsberg-Dahl expresses concern about this approach, highlighting the importance of durability and quality in long-term architectural projects. The enduring appeal and performance of Trespa® Meteon® cladding in Tromsø serve as a testament to its lasting quality.
